Consulate Diplomatic Corps Gets a Taste of China

Some dishes of Chinese cuisine.

Some dishes of Chinese cuisine.

At the end of March, the Vladivostok Diplomatic Corps took its annual trip to China organized by the Foundation for the Promotion of International Relations. The trip from Vladivostok to Suifenhei is close enough to make it an easy day trip for shoppers. On the Chinese side of the border there are hotels and shops catering to Russian tourists with signs in Russian and even shopkeepers fluent in Russian. The Russian side of the border is hoping to develop its tourism industry, but tourism from China has declined in recent years. The brief trip offered a glimpse of the possibilities for Russia and China to develop cross border trade. There is plenty of goodwill on both sides, but realizing the potential and creating the trade corridor that the Mayor of Mudanjiang envisions linking Harbin, Mudanjiang, and Suifenhei with Ussuriysk, Vladivostok and Vostochniy will require much work on both sides of the border.
