Global Understanding Project Links Russian and American Students

Students of VGUES and East Carolina universities meet for joint classes via Internet technologies.

On February 26, Vladivostok Consul General Tom Armbruster kicked off a semester-long online educational project between students from the Vladivostok State University of Economics and Services (VGUES) and East Carolina University. The CG made a game out of their first interaction, asking a number of foreign policy and current events questions. In a simple quiz to the two student groups, the Russians "outscored" the Americans in terms of the number of languages that they speak and the percentage of students who have been abroad. The Russians also knew more about the American elections than the American students knew about Russia's election. The American students did manage to name the first man in space, Yuriy Gagarin, and the Russians knew Neil Armstrong's "one small step…" quote. The video conference is a good first step for American students, especially given that only 3% of them take advantage of study abroad opportunities.
