Language Fellow Judy Elliott and Russian journalism majors explore free media
matters. | . Senior English Language Fellow Judy
Elliot gave a seminar on American newspapers to 30 journalism majors at the Institute
of Mass Communication at Vladivostok's Far East National University on April 24.
The seminar touched on hallmarks of a free press, namely the role of the First
Amendment as the basic legal framework for U.S. media operations, their "watchdog"
function, media values, editorial policies, and contemporary challenges in the
newspaper industry today. Ms. Elliott interacted with the students, answering
questions, using samples of American newspapers, and providing participants with
useful online resources. The event generated positive feedback and a call for
regularly-scheduled seminars of this kind.
