On January 21-24, Consul General Tom Armbruster and Foreign Commercial Service Assistant Irina Konstantinova visited the port of Magadan. During their visit they met with port of Magadan officials to discuss trade. They also visited the gold refinery to promote U.S.-Russian business cooperation. CG Armbruster had a meeting with the students of Northern International University where he discussed American diplomacy and Russian-American relation. He also discussed opportunities for bilateral cooperation duirng his 30-minutes long interview at the TV show "Tochka Zrenia" produced by the leading regional TV company "Kolyma Plus".

[Background information: Magadan sits on the Sea of Okhotsk and the harbor freezes over in winter, but FESCO ice breakers keep the port in business year round. Regular cargo service in the 1990's between Magadan and U.S. ports was disrupted, but port officials believe the market is now growing quickly enough to reestablish links if a shipping company is willing to take the risk. Magadan is a major gold producing region and several American firms have been instrumental in providing mining equipment and refining gold and silver.]
