April 24, Pol/Econ staff and Consul General attended an international seminar
for judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and law students entitled "Jury
Trial Litigation: Trial Techniques." The weeklong seminar, carried out with
support from USAID, included participants from the Russian-American Rule of Law
Consortium, the Primorskiy Kray Court and the United States District Court, West
District of Washington. After three days of training, participants took part in
a two-day mock jury trial, during which they had the chance to deploy some of
the new skills they had acquired during the first part of the week. Four U.S.
representatives (A District Court Judge, Assistant U.S. Attorney, a law clerk
and a private attorney with long experience in Russia) exchanged their knowledge
and experience with Russian counterparts. Consulate staff were very impressed
with the skill and professional demeanor of the participants, many of whom were
young law students.
