Tom Newell, former NBA basketball coach and consultant with over
25 years of experience, visited Primorskiy Krai as the star of a
Sports Diplomacy project organized by the U.S. Consulate General,
the Administration of Primorskiy Krai, and the Spartak-Primorye
basketball team, February 4-12. In Vladivostok, Tom Newell held
a three-day seminar for 23 coaches of junior teams from various
districts of Primorskiy Krai and gave a master class at a local
high school. He then traveled to Ussuriisk, the second largest city
in the Primorye region, to give a presentation entitled "New
Sports Horizons: Portals to the World" to 150 professors and
students, addressing the role of sports in creating international
communities and promoting wellness. The coach then led a master
class for an enthusiastic crowd of 50 high school youth and teachers.
CG Tom Armbruster and PAO Bridget Gersten participated in this exciting
Sports Diplomacy project, one that attracted extensive media attention
including interviews that appeared in broadcast, print, and online
mass media. The program was co-sponsored by Seattle-based NGO "Coaches
Who Care: The Larsen Legacy".
