Rhythm Road Jazz Energizes Local Cultural Scene in the Russian Far East

The State Department-funded Rhythm Road program energized the local cultural scene in Vladivostok from June 23-26, 2008. On their last stop of their seven-city Russian tour, Alvin Atkinson and the Sound Merchants put on mesmerizing performances at the local Musical Arts College, the State Philharmonic, and a popular jazz club, Zabriskie Point.  One highlight of the program was putting American and Russian jazz enthusiasts together on stage, for jam sessions and master classes.  Both concerts at the Philharmonic were sold out and met by enthusiastic crowds. Vladivostok CG Thomas Armbruster and PAO Bridget Gersten opened the events, noting how music has no barriers and creates new friends. The program generated a major mass media moment, with prime time news reports, a glossy magazine photo session, and extensive online coverage.
