American Corner Patrons Learn about American Indians

On June 30, Jeff Rotering, Consular Officer, met with 25 patrons of the Vladivostok American Corner and talked to them  about Native Americans in the United States. He provided historical background and described the  issues surrounding their languages and culture, religion and beliefs, their legal status and relationship with the federal government, various issues of identity and assimilation, etc. Mr. Rotering, a native of North Dakota, talked about the 4 Indian reservations on the territory of this state and about the tribes that live there.  After the presentation, Mr. Rotering answered  numerous questions from the audience, ranging from the living conditions on reservations and casinos to words of Indian origin  in the American English.
