Russian Alumni Share Tricks and Treats in Vladivostok
On the evening of October 31st, English Language Fellow, Allyson Kellum, along with Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, David Kessel, held a Halloween event at The American Councils for International Education in Vladivostok, hosted by Office Director, Denis Boyle. The event, which drew in around ten alumni of the FLEX program, involved such traditional Halloween activities as pumpkin carving, scary stories, including a reading of Edgar Allan Poe's, "The Raven," as well as a Halloween trivia contest. Also among those in attendance were a witch, and Batman villain, The Joker. Events such as this one provide valuable opportunities for students returning from their study-abroad experience in the U.S. to continue to engage American culture. Moreover, carrying around a pumpkin through the streets and buses of Vladivostok all day got some great looks and comments, and was a rather interesting and enjoyable social experiment.
