Vladivostok of 1919 through American Eyes
On September 3rd, Consul General Tom Armbruster, accompanied by Public Affairs Officer Sylva Etian, launched the opening ceremony of the historic photo exhibit “Vladivostok: Year 1919.” The exhibit features archival photos of Vladivostok taken by an American visitor to Vladivostok Merrill Haskell in 1919. Thanks to the efforts of Vladivostok historians and enthusiasts, Merrill Haskell’s family shared their family photo archive with Vladivostok. The gift turned out to be a real treasure for Vladivostok citizens. The photos provide a unique opportunity to witness historical events of the last century through the eyes of an independent observer, and at the same time, throw a new light on the history of the Russian Far East. The exhibit became possible due to the cooperation between Russian and American partners, including the US Consulate General in Vladivostok. The event, which had extensive media coverage, contributed substantially to mutual understanding between the respective countries.
