U.S. Government Contributes to the International Efforts in Saving Amur Leopards
U.S. Consulate General in Vladivostok teamed up with the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Arsenyev Museum to raise awareness about the endangered Amur Leopard. On November 8, almost all specialists on Amur Leopard from Russian Far East Academy of Science, NGOs and federal nature conservation bodies and representatives of the city and regional administration and diplomatic missions attended the event. The organizers arranged the screening of a new documentary on the endangered big cat. U.S. Veterarian Melody Roelke of the Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. was guest speaker, reporting on her research on the local Amur leopard population. She noted how the critically-endangered Amur leopards are at a survival crossroads, with only 30 some individuals left in the wild, and drew parallels with the situation of the Florida panther.
