Mariachi Fiesta Meets Standing Ovations in Vladivostok
California-based musical group “Mariachi Fiesta” enchanted audiences of all generations during their visit to Vladivostok, June 1-6. Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate in Vladivostok organized a series of projects, including concerts for 500 orphans during “Children’s Day” festivities and for the general public in Vladivostok and Nakhodka. Dr. Jeff Nevin, professor of music at Southwestern College led his lively, 14-piece orchestra to play a number of famous mariachi tunes, some original arrangements with a classical twist, and some American standards, including “Ring of Fire”, “Hotel California”, and “My Way”. The project was possible thanks to the Department of State Performing Arts Initiative (PAI) and collaboration with Southwestern College. The group, made up largely of accomplished musicians between the ages of 20-42, delighted crowds that kept calling for encores. Mariachi music was a true discovery and gift to all those who enjoyed the concerts, giving Russians an understanding of the talent and wealth of diversity in America. Consul General Tom Armbruster opened each event with inspirational words, noting how San Diego and Vladivostok are Sister Cities that have a lot in common. Public Affairs Officer Bridget Gersten, now leaving Vladivostok after two years, used the occasion to thank so many excellent Consulate partners for their continuing support and cooperation
