On March 18, Consular Officer Jeff Rotering spoke about the American Legal System to 100 students of the Law Institute at Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok. In his presentation Mr. Rotering, a lawyer before joining the Foreign Service, spoke about trial procedure in the United States, including the prohibition against double jeopardy in criminal cases, venue and commencement of legal actions, Miranda rights, rules of evidence, burdens of proof, jury responsibilities, and appeals. Students appreciated Mr. Rotering’s use of real-life examples of the legal concepts he discussed. The presentation was followed by a 20-minute question and answer session.
