USAID Experts Conduct Comprehensive Assessment in the Russian Far East
From May 11 through June 8, 2009, USAID experts conducted a comprehensive assessment of the agency’s program portfolio in the Russian Far East (RFE). The team visited numerous communities in the Russian Far East, always noting that the RFE is different from the rest of Russia. The goal of this assessment was to begin with a clean slate and, while working with current and potential new partners, to explore the possibilities for future development assistance in the RFE. After more than 70 meetings with local and regional leaders, it was determined that much remains to be done in the Russian Far East to improve the quality of life and instill an appreciation for democracy, particularly in the more remote parts of the region. The assessment team also noted that RFE authorities and communities are very receptive to building relationships with the United States in order to play a more active role in dealing with common problems, such as global climate change and management of our environment.
