Consul General Sylvia Curran welcomes conference participants.

On January 21, Consul General Sylvia Curran launched a two day Winter Methodological School organized by Far Eastern English Language Teachers Association (FEELTA) and Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) for over 200 English teachers from Primorskiy and Khabarovskiy regions. After the welcoming ceremony CG Curran made an emotionally touching and inspiring presentation on Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and how it has changed America. Ms. Curran made the presentation all the more meaningful by speaking about her personal experiences growing up in America; she presented an illuminating picture of what it was like being an African American during Dr. King’s time. Visibly moved, one of the professors quoted a poem written by her student in commemoration of Martin Luther King’s life entitled “We All Are Grains of the World’s Sand.” The teachers expressed their appreciation, acknowledging that the information would be used in their classrooms. The conference also included presentations by Sr. English Language Fellow Robyn Shifrin on EL teaching methodology as well as by professors from Vladivostok, Nakhodka, and Birobidjan.
