Report Crime

Americans traveling in Russia should take the same precautions they would in any major city. Carefully safeguard personal belongings, especially in hotel rooms, on trains, and in public places.

If you are the victim of a crime, you should report it to the local police - especially when theft of your passport is involved. The certificate the police issue must be presented to local OVIR (Office of visas and registrations) in order to process a replacement visa.

The police can be contacted by dialing 02.

We also encourage you to fill out a simple crime report at the Consular Section of the American Consulate General, we use information from these reports to warn Americans about patterns of crime in Russia.

In case of credit card theft contact your credit card company immediately and cancel your number.
